Areas of Urology and REsearch
OUR NAME AND OUR MISSION HAS GROWN
The byline Schellhammer Urological Research Foundation has been added to the familiar and long held identifier Virginia Prostate Center (VPC). Our clinical and basic science research in the field of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment has expanded with each passing year and will continue to do so. Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy diagnosed in men. However, two other urologic cancers - kidney cancer and bladder cancer - are responsible for significant mortality in both men and women. The critical mass of clinicians and basic scientists has grown so as to allow direction of our efforts to provide many of the tools that have been developed to address the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer to these malignancies as well. As an example, we have entered a collaborative effort to establish a SPORE (Specialized Program Of Research Excellence) with the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. Dr. Semmes and Dr. Lance are leading this effort.
Our intent and hope is that the FOUNDATION FOR UROLOGIC RESEARCH will provide a wellspring of support for improving the quality and quantity of life of patients with urologic cancer as well as benign diseases of the urinary system.
